“The LORD said to Gideon, “You have too many men. I cannot deliver Midian into their hands, or Israel would boast against me, ‘My own strength has saved me’” (Judges 7:2)

It’s another morning! Who gets the glory at the day’s end? God knew He would give victory to the Israelites over Midian, yet He also knew that the victory would make them arrogant if they fought with so many men. God knows all our hearts. God knows that certain victories can turn our hearts to self, but He is truly a loving God. So, in His wisdom, God made Gideon’s army shrink from 30,000 men to only 300 men. It may have humbled them yet the won. In Joshua 6, Israel faced the thick-walled obstacles of Jericho. The Lord said to Joshua: “March around the city once with all the armed men. Do this for six days… On the seventh day, march around the city seven times, with the priests blowing the trumpets” (Joshua 6:3-4). Instead of fighting as armed men, God made them walk. It would have been exhausting and humbling too, walking around the city’s high walls, in the glare of their adversaries, once for six days and particularly seven times on the seventh day! Yet the Lord gave them victory; “the wall collapsed” (Joshua 6:20).

God over everything. Paul said at a moment in his life (2 Corinthians 12:7-10): “In order to keep me from becoming conceited, I was given a thorn in my flesh…” God permitted a ‘thorn’ and Paul would decide to rely on God’s grace alone. He did say emphatically: “I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ’s power may rest on me.” Take ALL the glory Lord!
