“At the end of the 430 years, to the very day, all the Lord’s divisions left Egypt. Because the Lord kept vigil that night to bring them out of Egypt, on this night all the Israelites are to keep vigil to honour the Lord for the generations to come” (Exodus 12:41-42)

Isn’t it remarkable that God keeps vigils? Yes, He does always for those He loves! These scriptures above encourage us to find true rest and peace in Him. God had triumphed over Pharaoh’s stubbornness to enslave Israel and now “all the Lord’s forces left the land.” How was this possible? “Because the Lord kept vigil that night to bring them out of Egypt.” The Lord Himself, in a literal sense, stayed awake all through to ensure that ALL Israel left Egypt. Truly, God never sleeps.

The psalmist declares: “Indeed, He who watches over Israel will neither slumber nor sleep. The Lord watches over you—the Lord is your shade at your right hand; the sun will not harm you by day, nor the moon by night” (Psalm 121:4-6). Praise the Lord. God alone is able to give us rest on all sides. 2 Chronicles 20:30 says about Jehoshaphat: “And the kingdom of Jehoshaphat was at peace, for His God had given him rest on every side.”

So, the psalmist sings again: “Unless the Lord builds the house, the builders labour in vain. Unless the Lord watches over the city, the guards stand watch in vain. In vain you rise early and stay up late, toiling for food to eat— for He grants sleep to those He loves” (Psalm 127:1-3). Thank You Father for Your eyes steadfast upon us. Amen.
