“Surely God is good to Israel, to those who are pure in heart. But as for me, my feet had almost slipped; I had nearly lost my foothold. For I envied the arrogant when I saw the prosperity of the wicked” (Psalm 73:1-3)

The psalmist begins with a truth we need to guard jealously so we may not slip when we see the wicked excel. Like in David’s days, we see the wicked excel too. They seem to “have no struggles; their bodies are healthy and strong. They are free from common human burdens; they are not plagued by human ills. Therefore, pride is their necklace; they clothe themselves with violence. From their callous hearts comes iniquity, their evil imaginations have no limits” (Psalm 73:4-6). At this point, David began to ponder if living the life God desires was worth it. He thought: “Surely in vain I have kept my heart pure and have washed my hands in innocence. All day long I have been afflicted, and every morning brings new punishments” (Psalm 73:13-14).

Are we in such a reflective situation like this? Thanks be to God who never leaves us comfortless. The psalmist then said: “If I had spoken out like that, I would have betrayed your children” (Psalm 73:15). The words we speak might discourage others and cause them to fall away from Christ. He was troubled trying to understand these things but when he “entered the sanctuary of God” and he understood better (Psalm 73:18-28). Do we feel this way too? It’s needful to seek God’s presence. It will change and renew our insights, so we will say: “My flesh and my heart may fail, but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever” (Psalm 73:26). Hallelujah!
