Glory Ahead

“Then Simon Peter, who had a sword, drew it and struck the high priest’s servant, cutting off his right ear. (The servant’s name was Malchus). Jesus commanded Peter, “Put your sword away! Shall I not drink the cup the Father has given Me?” (John 18:10-11)
Peter had zealously struck a servant of the high priest, cutting off his ear. After all, to him, Jesus had said to them moments earlier: “Now, however, the one with a purse should take it, and likewise a bag; and the one without a sword should sell his cloak and buy one” (Luke 22:36). Yet, Jesus had an accurate message for Peter: “Put your sword away! Shall I not drink the cup the Father has given Me?” Jesus did say He didn’t come to destroy men’s lives but to save them (Luke 9:56). This glorified God. He called His crucifixion, the ‘cup’ the Father gave Him to drink. This certainly wasn’t a cup of bliss, but one with pain. It wasn’t pleasant, in fact it had shame, but it was necessary because God knew the glory and joy ahead. Hebrews 12:2 says: “Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith; who for the joy that was set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God.”
Joseph drank a cup too. Psalm 105:17-18 says about him: “He (God) sent a man before them, even Joseph, who was sold for a servant: Whose feet they hurt with fetters: he was laid in iron.” Yet, God brought him forth princely and radiantly! God, the Great Architect, does make us drink. Is God allowing you to drink of a certain cup? He knows what is ahead! Christ resurrected and He’s seated in glory! Amen.
