“Then Saul ordered his son Jonathan and all his servants to kill David. But Jonathan delighted greatly in David, so he warned David, saying, “My father Saul intends to kill you. Be on your guard in the morning; find a secret place and hide there… Then Jonathan spoke well of David to his father Saul and said to him, “The king should not sin against his servant David; he has not sinned against you. In fact, his actions have been highly beneficial to you” (1 Samuel 19:1-4)

There’s a remarkable story of friendship between two athletes, Jesse Owens and Luz Long. Jesse Owens, an African-American, competed at the Olympics in Germany while Adolf Hitler ruled. Hitler hated what he saw as Jesse swept past other athletes in races. During the long jump event, the crowd displayed its disapproval of Jesse too, as he competed again Luz, a German athlete. Jesse began to struggle, failing in his first two attempts with only one attempt left. Luz observed Jesse’s anxiety and went to him and encouraged him on the last attempt! Jesse succeeded and would win even ahead of Luz! They struck a friendship that did last!

Proverbs 18:24 affirms: “Some friendships don’t last for long, but there is one loving friend who is joined to your heart closer than any other!” Just like Luz, it was Jonathan who purposed to be such a friend to David and loved him. Even though, Jonathan ought to be the heir to the throne in human terms, yet he aligned with God’s good purpose for David. We surely need to be like Luz for others. “A friend loves at all times, and a brother is born for adversity” (Proverbs 17:17). Amen.
