“And now I want to plead with those two dear women, Euodias and Syntyche. Please, please, with the Lord’s help, quarrel no more—be friends again. And I ask you, my true teammate, to help these women, for they worked side by side with me in telling the Good News to others; and they worked with Clement, too, and the rest of my fellow workers whose names are written in the Book of Life” (Philippians 4:2-4)
In the first verse of Philippians 4, Paul addressed the believer as his “dear friends.” Yet in their midst, were two devoted women who held grudges. Both were his friends, and he sought that they restored friendliness. That’s the reach of friendship. First, they were God’s children “whose names are written in the Book of Life.” Second, Paul writes plainly: “God doesn’t want His children holding grudges.” Instead, God says: “Don’t hit back; discover beauty in everyone. If you’ve got it in you, get along with everybody. Don’t insist on getting even” (Romans 12:17-18).
Where a grudge exists, it indicates there’s been a crack and the parties involved cannot help themselves to resolve their difference. So, Paul says “help these women.” We can make a difference and this we must do quickly because Hebrews 12:14-15 says: “Work at getting along with each other and with God. Otherwise, you’ll never get so much as a glimpse of God. Make sure no one gets left out of God’s generosity. Keep a sharp eye out for weeds of bitter discontent. A thistle or two gone to seed can ruin a whole garden in no time.” So, through God's wisdom, let’s make a difference in the lives of others, to become friends again.
