“By now the hour was already late. So, the disciples came to Jesus and said, “This is a desolate place, and the hour is already late. Dismiss the crowd so they can go to the surrounding countryside and villages and buy themselves something to eat.” But Jesus told them, “You give them something to eat.” (Mark 9:35-37)

How could Jesus say such a thing? “You give them something to eat.” It was late into the evening. It’s a lonely place. Afterall, Jesus went first into that solitary place. There are over five thousand people. Where’s the money to feed all these people? So, His disciple replied Him: “Should we go out and spend two hundred denarii to give all of them bread to eat?” Just like we have done or said sometimes, they looked to themselves saying “Should we…?” However, Jesus already had in mind what He would do. John 6:6 says: “He asked this only to test him, for He already had in mind what He was going to do.” Jesus wanted them to recognise that He is Grace and for them to increase their faith in Him. They hadn’t realised this. In 1 Kings 17, God likewise stirred the faith of Elijah in the face of a famine. He said: “I have commanded the ravens to feed you there” (1 Kings 17:2). Could God be real that ravens would bring Elijah food? The Bible says: “So Elijah did what the LORD had told him…” and his obedience made the difference.

‘It’s too late.’ It’s not late when Jesus speaks. ‘There are too many people.’ God knows all people. ‘We don’t have enough.’ God can supply according to His glorious riches. Father, increase our faith!
