“Anyone who welcomes you welcomes Me, and anyone who welcomes Me welcomes the one who sent Me…. And if anyone gives even a cup of cold water to one of these little ones who is my disciple, truly I tell you, that person will certainly not lose their reward” (Matthew 10:40,42)
“…if anyone gives…” When the woman of Shunem invited Elisha, God’s true servant into her home (2 Kings 4:9-10), little did she know that she was inviting the Almighty Himself. Jesus said: “Anyone who welcomes you welcomes Me.” Her gesture was selfless, but had a supernatural impact. God pays attention to these things done for the sake of His gospel. Someone might say ‘I am not as wealthy as she was’, but Jesus raises us above this perspective by saying: “if anyone gives even a cup of cold water….” Water is the commonest thing stored in every home. By implication, everyone has a given capacity to do and to give for the sake of the gospel.
In John 4, Jesus asked a woman at the well of Samaria: “Will you give Me a drink?” (John 4:7). Though puzzled that a Jew asked a Samaritan for a drink, she was willing to give Him. From this single request, a dialogue ensued and her village saw the light of God. “Many of the Samaritans from that town believed in Him because of the woman’s testimony… the Samaritans came to Him… and because of His words many more became believers” (John 4:39-41). Praise God! We all can surely work for the sake of the gospel. As we give ourselves over to Him first (2 Corinthians 8:5), may He always guide us on what to do. Amen.
