“Even in darkness light dawns for the upright, for those who are gracious and compassionate and righteous. Good will come to those who are generous and lend freely, who conduct their affairs with justice” (Psalm 112:4-5)
The psalmist delivered this personal testimony: “If I say, ‘Surely the darkness will hide me, and the light become night around me’— even the darkness is not dark to You, but the night shines like the day, for darkness is as light to You” (Psalm 139:11-12). There’s no kind of darkness around the upright that will not be overcome by God’s radiant light. John declared likewise: “In Him was life, and that life was the light of all mankind. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it” (John 1:4-5). Praise the Lord. When darkness surfaced over the universe, the Lord said: “’Let there be light,’ and there was light” (Genesis 1:2).
Are we facing the darkness of persecution or unjustly treated? Or being cast out or rejected? Or without direction or hope? Joseph, the son of Jacob, faced such darkness several times. Yet in all these, Joseph submitted to the Lord and remained “gracious and compassionate and righteous," even giving aid to fellow prisoners. When Jesus faced dark times, Peter recalled: “When they heaped abuse on Him, He did not retaliate; when He suffered, He made no threats, but entrusted Himself to Him who judges justly” (1 Peter 2:23).
Oh! the splendour of His light! Let’s remain generous, compassionate, and righteous. James says to us: “Come close to God, and God will come close to you… Humble yourselves before the Lord, and He will lift you up in honour.” Amen.
