“It seemed like a dream, too good to be true, when God returned Zion’s exiles. We laughed, we sang, we couldn’t believe our good fortune. We were the talk of the nations— “God was wonderful to them!” God was wonderful to us; we are one happy people. And now, God, do it again— bring rains to our drought-stricken lives. So those who planted their crops in despair will shout “Yes!” at the harvest, so those who went off with heavy hearts will come home laughing, with armloads of blessing” (Psalm 126)

One of the great attributes of our Father is recorded in Hebrews 13:8: “For Jesus doesn’t change—yesterday, today, tomorrow, He’s always totally Himself.” It was in this understanding that the psalmist approached God. He remembered how God in the past had returned those who were in exile. He remembered how they sang and laughed at the wonders of God. Now, they faced another dreadful situation, yet he says: “And now, God, do it again…”

We can live daily knowing that God is the same yesterday, today and tomorrow. So, Hebrews 6:12 exhorts: “And now I want each of you to extend that same intensity toward a full-bodied hope, and keep at it till the finish. Don’t drag your feet. Be like those who stay the course with committed faith and then get everything promised to them.” God will supply His mercy and grace, and we must bring along our faith (Romans 4:16). Though there was despair, yet they sowed their seeds in spite of their tears.

The psalmist says doubtlessly: “He who continually goes forth weeping, bearing seed for sowing, shall doubtless come again with rejoicing, bringing his sheaves with him.” Amen.
