“When the water was gone, she put the boy in the shade of a bush. Then she went and sat down by herself about a hundred yards away. ‘I don’t want to watch the boy die,’ she said, as she burst into tears” (Genesis 21:15-16)
Relationships between Sarah and Hagar had gone south. Abraham was obligated to make Hagar and His son Ishmael leave. “Abraham got up early the next morning, prepared food and a container of water, and strapped them on Hagar’s shoulders” (Genesis 21:14). Now the water was gone. Hagar’s reaction was to separate herself afar from the situation. She gave up. However, God heard the cry of the lad. God hears! In Luke 18, in the midst of the crowds, Jesus heard the cry of Bartimaeus who said: “Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me!”
Now, the Lord spoke through His angel to Hagar saying: “Do not be afraid! God has heard the boy crying as he lies there” (Genesis 21:17). While he laid there, the Lord heard him. The Lord hears you from where you are. Then importantly the Lord said: “Go to him and comfort him, for I will make a great nation from his descendants” (Genesis 21:18). Go to him (not leave him) and comfort him (not sob for him). In her place of comfort, God opened her eyes to see a well full of water!
Don’t give up, but go and comfort. “What a wonderful God we have—He is the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the source of every mercy, and the One who so wonderfully comforts and strengthens us in our hardships and trials” (2 Corinthians 1:3). Praise the Lord!
