“Then they believed His promises and sang His praise. But they soon forgot what He had done and did not wait for His plan to unfold. In the desert they gave in to their craving; in the wilderness they put God to the test” (Psalm 106:12-14)

“But soon the forgot what He had done…” Forgetting God’s goodness to us can lead down a path that further robs us of the goodness of His plans that are yet to unfold. When we believed and received His promise of salvation, we received a great joy too and began to sing His praises! This we must not forget. The journey to the ‘Promised Land’ will have its trials.

These Israelites forgot too quickly the things that God did for them. In the desert of their lives, they would not wait for the Lord. Instead of starving their temporal desires, they gave in to them. Even worse, in their wilderness, “they put God to the test.” We will face tests and trials as the Lord permits (James 1:2). God Himself tests us, but in the example of these Israelites, they tested God. Jesus, however, gives us a godly example. In the wilderness of His life, He starved His cravings. “Turn these stones into bread” the Devil said to a visibly hungry Jesus, but He replied: “Man shall not live by bread alone but by every word that proceeds out of the mouth of God” (Matthew 4:4). The word of God is a surer promise, of greater and better things, than any ‘sweet yet temporal bread’ craved for now.

Father, in any desert experience You allow, help us to count the joy ahead and trust Your accompanying powerful grace which leads us into the fullness of Christ. Amen.
