“David got up from the floor, washed his face and combed his hair, put on a fresh change of clothes, then went into the sanctuary and worshiped. Then he came home and asked for something to eat. They set it before him and he ate” (2 Samuel 12:20)
It might come across as a strange attitude what David did here. He had been praying and hoping for God’s mercy (2 Samuel 2:22) concerning his son who was ill. When it didn’t happen, David got up and washed. His servants did think something was wrong with him saying “What’s going on with you?” However, David understood there’s always goodness with the Lord. Hence, he “went into the sanctuary and worshipped.” That’s an insightful response to what was before him. He didn’t allow his soul go into anguish or perish, by indulging in eating or drinking, but he first worshipped and was strengthened. After this, he proceeded to comfort his wife. 1 Samuel 12:24 says: “David went and comforted his wife Bathsheba.”
Worship reminds us there is an ever-living and faithful God and it revives our spirit. “Though the cherry trees don’t blossom and the strawberries don’t ripen, though the apples are worm-eaten and the wheat fields stunted, though the sheep pens are sheepless and the cattle barns empty, I’m singing joyful praise to God. I’m turning cartwheels of joy to my Saviour God. Counting on God’s rule to prevail, I take heart and gain strength. I run like a deer. I feel like I’m king of the mountain!” (Habakkuk 3:17-19). This can happen when we get up and worship Him. We’ll run over the disappointment like the deer and be God’s kings over life’s mountains!
