Dealing With Guilt❤️
“They said to one another, ‘Surely, we are being punished because of our brother. We saw how distressed he was when he pleaded with us for his life, but we would not listen; that’s why this distress has come on us.’ Reuben replied, ‘Didn’t I tell you not to sin against the boy? But you wouldn’t listen! Now we must give an accounting for his blood” (Genesis 42:21-22)
It had been over 20 years since Joseph’s brothers sold him cruelly to merchants, yet they hadn’t gotten over this event. Now in Egypt, the guilt of their actions haunted them. In the presence of their brother whom they didn’t recognise, they yet remembered what they had done. “Didn’t I tell you not to sin against the boy?” Reuben said. Sometimes, we do remember things we did wrong. Events and people can also make us remember. Guilt is a restraint in our lives. We can’t wish it away because guilt accuses and the devil the Bible says is “the accuser of our brethren”, who accuses believers before God, day and night” (Revelations 12:10).
So, we must hand the guilt to God, who alone can justify anyone. David did say: “I acknowledged my sin to You, and my iniquity I did not hide; I said, ‘I will confess my transgressions to the Lord’; and You forgave the guilt of my sin” (Psalm 32:5). The Passion Translation says: “All at once the guilt of my sin washed away and all my pain disappeared!” That’s powerful. Now, Romans 8:33 declares: “Who will bring a charge against God’s elect? God is the one who justifies.” God can help anyone overcome a guilt, and glorify the one He justifies. Hallelujah!
