“All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, reproofing, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work” (2 Timothy 3:16-17)

Scriptures teach and train us, preparing us for every good work. Likewise, scriptures also reprove and correct us, preparing us too for every good work. This is a profound wisdom that prompts we desire humble hearts, because there’ll be times when we will need correction. The King Ahab (2 Chronicles 18), didn’t realise that the prophet Michaiah was bringing value to his life, a time he needed correction. In Ahab’s worldview, Michaiah only spoke negative stuff about him. How wrong Ahab was. He told Jehoshaphat about Michaiah: “There’s one other prophet. We could ask the Lord through him, but I hate him. He never prophesies anything good about me, but always something bad.”

Ahab’s hatred hindered him. When Michaiah did speak God’s counsel, he said: “I saw the army of Israel scattered over the hills like sheep without a shepherd. The Lord said, ‘They have no leaders. They should go home and not fight.’” These are loving words of safety from the Lord, but Ahab’s pride blinded him. Hebrews 12:14-15 reveals an attitude that can help us to receive sound counsel: “Make every effort to live in peace with everyone and to be holy; without holiness no one will see the Lord. See to it that no one falls short of the grace of God and that no bitter root grows up to cause trouble and defile many.”

Father, help us to have humble hearts to receive Your correction which equip us for every good work in Jesus’ name. Amen.
