“At the first light of dawn, the king got up and hurried to the lions’ den. When he came near the den, he called to Daniel in an anguished voice, “Daniel, servant of the living God, has your God, whom you serve continually, been able to rescue you from the lions?” (Daniel 6:19-20)
Darius, King of Babylon, made notable remarks about Daniel and his affiliation to his God. First remark: He’s "the living God.” Daniel must have professed God as the living God to the Babylonians. In Matthew 16:16, Peter likewise said to Jesus: “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.” Our heavenly Father is ever-present, ever-living God. We see His works every day, engraved in His creations! Second remark: the God “you serve continually.” Daniel decided to serve Him continually. Even in a rough moment of His life, he still chose to serve Him.
In contrast, the prophet Malachi tells us about a time when the people thought otherwise about serving God. These people said: “It is futile to serve God. What have we gained by keeping His requirements and walking mournfully before the LORD of Hosts? So now we call the arrogant blessed. Not only do evildoers prosper, they even test God and escape” (Malachi 3:14-15). These people walked away. However, Daniel’s stance reveals to us that serving God sincerely shows that we trust Him. Daniel 6:23 says: “The king was overjoyed and gave orders to lift Daniel out of the den. And when Daniel was lifted from the den, no wound was found on him, because he had trusted in His God.” Oh may we serve the Lord continually, for “For He is the living God and He endures forever” (Daniel 6:26)! Amen.
