“Only simpletons believe everything they’re told! The prudent carefully consider their steps. The wise are cautious and avoid danger; fools plunge ahead with reckless confidence” (Proverbs 14:15-16)
The latter part of the verse above says its is possible to have a “reckless confidence.” It appears like good confidence, but it is reckless. The Lord God has a better way. We are charged to consider every step. The word consider is a wisdom attitude. It means to “look attentively” or “think carefully about something, typically before making a decision.” So, it is a willing and teachable element that builds our faith. Isaiah 28:10 speaks about this learning process: “For precept must be upon precept, precept upon precept; line upon line, line upon line; here a little, and there a little.”
Mary, the mother of Jesus demonstrated this profound attitude. When she was visited and greeted by the Angel Gabriel, the Word says she “considered what kind of salutation this might be.” It was a fruitful outcome. Again, in Luke 2, when Jesus, at the age of 12, lost but found in the temple, told His parents that He ought to be about his Father’s business, Mary “treasured all these things, giving careful thought to them and pondering them in her heart.”
Proverbs 31:16-18 speaks about the ‘Woman Of Proverbs’ this way: “She considers a field and buys it; from her profits she plants a vineyard. She girds herself with strength and strengthens her arms. She perceives that her merchandise is good, and her lamp does not go out by night.” Are there decisions before us today? What are we carefully and patiently considering? Thank God we have the Spirit of Christ in us to lead us. Amen.
