“Look at all the beautiful flowers of the field. They don’t work or toil, and yet not even Solomon in all his splendour was robed in beauty like one of these” (Matthew 6:28-29)
There’s certainly one thing God doesn’t want us to become: slaves of work and ultimately slaves of money. In His teaching, Jesus gave great depths of God’s providence. He doesn’t say we should be idle or do nothing yet He certainly says: “Don’t worry.” Worry drives us into so much labour and toil. So, Jesus says: “Consider the birds—do you think they worry about their existence? They don’t plant or reap or store up food, yet your heavenly Father provides them each with food. Aren’t you much more valuable to your Father than they?” Worry overdrives and overwhelms with where/how to plant, where/how to reap and where/how to store up things, but these birds have no barns. Jesus calls us to a place of trust, where we are free from life’s exhaustions. He said: "Look at all the beautiful flowers of the field. They don’t work or toil…” The Hebrew meaning of the word ‘toil’ is ‘to grow weary, exhausted of burdens and grief, to labour with wearisome effort.’ Jesus doesn’t want that for us, so He says “Look at the beautiful flowers…” Then Jesus places everything that speaks splendour about the wealthy King Solomon beneath the beauty of these flowers!
“I have needs Lord!” Jesus says: “Your heavenly Father already knows” (Matthew 6:32). Let’s consider. “So above all, constantly seek God’s kingdom and His righteousness, then all these less important things will be given to you abundantly” (Matthew 6:33). Jesus at Your word, I refuse to worry about tomorrow (Matthew 6:34). Amen.
