“In your anger do not sin: Do not let the sun go down while you are still angry, and do not give the devil a foothold” (Ephesians 4:26-27)

There’s an urgency spoken in these verses where a conflict exists. “Do not let the sun go down while you are still angry.” Between sunrise and sunset are about 12 hours only. So, we are literally urged to act quickly in whatever ‘situation of conflict’ we may be in. This reveals how much God wants a restoration. Don’t let it drag. It hinders the devil from gaining a foothold in our hearts.

Jesus taught us saying: “When you are on the way to court with your adversary, settle your differences quickly. Otherwise, your accuser may hand you over to the judge, who will hand you over to an officer, and you will be thrown into prison” (Matthew 5:24). That’s a picture of the devil gaining a foothold. So, settle matters quickly. Again, Jesus taught: “So if you are offering your gift at the altar and there remember that your brother has something against you, leave your gift there before the altar. First go and be reconciled to your brother; then come and offer your gift” (Matthew 5:23-24). Jesus says “Go first.” He emphasises an urgency to end a conflict. Why? Not to give the devil a foothold. He plainly says to us ‘do it quickly.’

Finally, Proverbs 19:11 exhorts: “An understanding person demonstrates patience, for mercy means holding your tongue. When you are insulted, be quick to forgive and forget it, for you are virtuous when you overlook an offense.” We can be assured that God is willing to help us through His merciful grace as He desires a restoration.
