“Listen! A farmer went out to plant some seed. As he scattered it across his field… some seed fell among thorns that grew up and choked out the tender plants, so they produced no grain” (Mark 4:3-7)

When Jesus explained the parable, He said: “The seed that fell among the thorns represents others who hear God’s word, but all too quickly the message is crowded out by the worries of this life, the lure of wealth, and the desire for other things, so no fruit is produced” (Mark 4:18). Worries are like thorns; they prick, pierce and choke and they cause uncreativeness.

These were the exact words written to Timothy (and us): “And some people, craving money, have wandered from the true faith and pierced themselves with many sorrows” (1 Timothy 6:10). The parable was proven true. They were worried about life, lure of wealth, and the desire for other things, just as Jesus said, and were pierced with sorrows. But God wants us to regain control with joy (Matthew 6:33), saying: “True godliness with contentment is itself great wealth.” Paul called it a secret (Philippians 4). “I have learned how to be content with whatever I have.” Again, he said: “I have learned the secret of living in every situation.” Then, he said: “For I can do everything through Christ, who gives me strength.”

So, let us not “worry about anything; instead, pray about everything. Tell God what you need, and thank Him for all He has done.” As we trust God for our needs to be met, let’s hug contentment which endures, for it recalls what God has already done and leads us into thanksgiving which itself enables our faith!
