“O Lord, our Lord, how excellent is Your name in all the earth, who have set Your glory above the heavens! Out of the mouth of babes and nursing infants You have ordained strength, because of Your enemies, that You may silence the enemy and the avenger” (Psalm 8:1-2)
As grown-ups, we can easily depend on our strengths and perceived abilities. Instead, let the Lord who gives strength and abilities carry us and lead us. The psalmist says: “How excellent is Your name in all the earth.” The name of the Lord isn’t just good or very good, but excellent, and excellent in ALL the earth.
Philippians 2:9-10 affirms this even greater: “Therefore God also has highly exalted Him (Jesus) and given Him the name which is above every name, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of those in heaven, and of those on earth, and of those under the earth.” Hallelujah! This is the tremendous strength we can depend on. This ‘praise-strength’ however comes to “babes and nursing infants.” Jesus spoke in Matthew 19:14-15: “Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them; for it is to those who are childlike that the Kingdom of the Heavens belongs. And after He had placed His hands on them.” We must become child-like too to be ordained with this strength, hence the lifeway of humility. James declares: “God resists the proud, but gives grace to the humble” (James 4:7). His grace is strength indeed for the humble.
Needing strength? “Know that the LORD is God. It is He who made us, and we are His; we are His people, the sheep of His pasture” (Psalm 100:3).
