“So, he went to Zarephath. As he arrived at the gates of the village, he saw a widow gathering sticks, and he asked her, “Would you please bring me a little water in a cup?” (1 kings 17:10)

She was gathering sticks. She was poor. This widow was preparing her family’s final moment due to the famine. It must have been a frantic moment. Yet in that state, she was willing to listen and attend to Elijah’s request. Difficult and uncertain times might come, and may seek to engross us and overtake us, and shut out the door of kindness on anything and to anyone. However, this woman had a graceful heart and even in her difficulty, she knew she could offer a cup of water. Jesus does say: “You can be sure that whoever gives even a drink of cold water to one of the least of these My followers because he is My follower, will certainly receive a reward” (Matthew 10:42). Little did she know that the Lord would prepare a gracious supply. “So, there was food every day for Elijah and for the woman and her family” (1 Kings 17:15).

In Matthew 14, Jesus heard that John, His cousin, had been killed. So, He withdrew to a place to be alone, yet the crowds would not let that be. We can picture their yearnings with the noises. Jesus could easily have sent everyone home, yet seeing them “He had compassion on them and healed their sick” (Matthew 14:14). Moments later, His compassion led to a miracle and “about 5,000 men were fed that day, in addition to all the women and children!” (Matthew 14:21). Father, always help us to make room for You.
