“Sing God a brand-new song! Earth and everyone in it, sing! Sing to God—worship God! Shout the news of His victory from sea to sea, take the news of His glory to the lost, news of His wonders to one and all! For God is great, and worth a thousand Hallelujahs. His furious beauty puts the other gods to shame...” (Psalm 96:1-5)

Rejoicing in the Lord will be difficult when it is anchored on things around us, or situations before us, or on things we have or don’t have. The prophet Isaiah gives us a pivotal perspective to have. He said: “I am overwhelmed with joy in the Lord my God! For He has dressed me with the clothing of salvation and draped me in a robe of righteousness. I am like a bridegroom dressed for His wedding or a bride with her jewels” (Isaiah 61:10-11).

There’s an overwhelming joy that springs forth and energizes when we gaze constantly on what Jesus did for us through His death and His resurrection. David desired this strength when he sang: “Restore to me the joy of Your salvation, and make me willing to obey you” (Psalm 51:12). This joy must be the joy that stirred Paul and Silas, to pray and sing hymns to God even when they were bound in prison chains (Acts 16:25). While singing, the prisoners listened. And by their singing, they took news of God’s glory to the lost!

Let’s set out and sing new songs! “God made the heavens— royal splendour radiates from Him; a powerful beauty sets Him apart. Bravo, God, Bravo!” (Psalm 96:5-7).
