“For the entire law is fulfilled in keeping this one command: ‘Love your neighbour as yourself’” (Galatians 5:14)

When the Israelites came out of Egypt by the Lord’s hand, they began a journey into the Promised Land and into nationhood. God gave them Ten Commandments, which anchor on two aspects: relationships with God and relationships with people. This new nation was to be built based on relationships! At the heart of these commandments is love, as Jesus explained when asked which is the greatest law. He said: “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’ This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbour as yourself.’ All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments” (Matthew 22:37-40). This reveals love as the fruit of the Spirit from which the other virtues flow. “But the fruit produced by the Holy Spirit within you is divine love in all its varied expressions: joy that overflows, peace that subdues, patience that endures, kindness in action, a life full of virtue, faith that prevails, gentleness of heart, and strength of spirit” (Galatians 5:22-23).

Love is responsibly powerful. Galatians 5:15 advises: “If you bite and devour each other, watch out or you will be destroyed by each other.” Instead, we put on love. “Bear with one another and forgive any complaint you may have against someone else. Forgive as the Lord forgave you. And over all these virtues put on love, which is the bond of perfect unity” (Colossians 3:13-14). This bond of perfect unity is what we need: LOVE.
