“Bless the Lord, O my soul: and all that is within me, bless His holy name” (Psalm 103:1)

It is easy to understand when God blesses a man. He helps us, He strengthens us or, He encourages us. We too can bless the Lord as scriptures say. Now, God doesn’t need help from us. We can’t give Him strength, yet we can ‘bless Him’ in praiseful thankfulness. “Bless the Lord, O my soul, and forget not all His benefits” (Psalm 103:2). The psalmist called for praises and thanksgiving unto the Lord. David sang saying: “I will (praise) give thanks to You, because I am awesomely and wonderfully made; wonderful are Your works, And my soul knows it very well” (Psalm 139:14). He was blessing the Lord for how he was made. Our Father Himself said: “Sacrifice a thank offering to God, and fulfill your vows to the Most High. Call upon Me in the day of trouble; I will deliver you, and you will honour Me” (Psalm 50:14-15). Thanksgiving and praises are not ordinary before the Lord. In Luke 9, Jesus took the five loaves and the two fish given to Him “and looking up to heaven, He gave thanks and broke them.” Again, at the tomb of Lazarus, Jesus “lifted His eyes upward and said, ‘Father, I thank You that You have heard Me’” (John 11:41). God was honoured.

If the psalmist urges us to come into His gates with thanksgiving and come into His courts with praise”, surely it must be a glorious thing to do. “It is good to give thanks to the LORD, to sing praises to the Most High. It is good to proclaim Your unfailing love in the morning, Your faithfulness in the evening” (Psalm 92:1-2).
