“Jesus took the five loaves and two fish, looked up toward heaven, and blessed them. Then, breaking the loaves into pieces, He kept giving the bread and fish to the disciples so they could distribute it to the people” (Luke 9:16)

Some translations say Jesus took the five loaves and two fish and gave thanks. The disciples had said it’s all we have “unless we go and buy food for all these people” (Luke 9:13). However, even in the apparent lack or insufficiency, Jesus teaches us to bless and give thanks for what we have. Someone might say: “I don’t have five loaves and two fish.” You may not have a loaf of bread but you have “only a handful of flour in a jar and a little oil in a jug” (1 Kings 17:12) like the widow of Zarephath. Bless it and give thanks. Someone might say: “I don’t have a handful of flour and a little oil.” You might have “a jar of oil” (2 Kings 4:2) like the widow of the prophet. Bless it and give thanks. Someone might say: “I don’t even have a jar of oil.” You may have grains from “gleaning behind the harvesters” (Ruth 2:3) like Ruth. Bless it and give thanks. Someone might say: “I don’t have grains.” You have hands and say like Ruth: “Let me go into the fields and glean heads of grain after someone in whose sight I may find favour” (Ruth 2:2). Bless them and give thanks!

Moses declared: “The LORD will open the heavens, the storehouse of His bounty, to send rain on your land in season and to bless all the work of your hands. You will lend to many nations but will borrow from none” (Deuteronomy 28:12). Amen.
