“When Joseph came to them the next morning, he saw that they were dejected. So he asked Pharaoh’s officials who were in custody with him in his master’s house, “Why do you look so sad today?” (Genesis 40:6-7)

The account of Joseph, going from the prison to the palace, is a cheering theme, but a closer detail should be given to his attitude and servitude all through the tough process. While the cupbearer and baker were in prison because they “offended their master, the king of Egypt” (Genesis 40:6), Joseph was in prison on a false accusation. However, Genesis 39:20-21 says: “But while Joseph was there in the prison, the Lord was with him; He showed him kindness and granted him favour in the eyes of the prison warden.”

Though Joseph was a falsely accused man and also a shamed man, yet he would take notice of the sad faces of fellow prisoners. He pressed on them saying: “Do not interpretations belong to God? Tell me your dreams.” In Matthew 14, Jesus heard that John has been killed. He withdrew to a solitary place, but when He landed and saw a large crowd that followed him, “He had compassion on them and healed their sick.” That same evening, He fed miraculously “about five thousand men, besides women and children” with “five loaves and the two fish.”

We might be are facing a low moment, but do we stop observing and doing good to others? Maybe there’s a problem before us to solve, but our problem is seeking to raise a deafening voice over it. May we arise and look and trust the certainty of God’s provident presence.
