As Usual

“Jesus went out as usual to the Mount of Olives, and his disciples followed him. On reaching the place, he said to them, “Pray that you will not fall into temptation.” He withdrew about a stone’s throw beyond them, knelt down and prayed” (Luke 22:39-41)
The Amplified Version says “As was His habit.” Some other versions say “As was His custom.” Jesus had developed a pattern in all His doings (Luke 2:52) even to His ministry’s earthly end. His patterns strengthened him. This implies that Jesus had a plan and plans relieve us of certain pressures. Early in His life, Luke 4:16 reveals to us: “When He came to the village of Nazareth, His boyhood home, he went as usual to the synagogue on the Sabbath and stood up to read the Scriptures.” Jesus went as usual and the synagogue leaders took notice of him. On this Sabbath day, “the scroll of Isaiah the prophet was handed to Him. He unrolled the scroll and found the place” which was written about Him. Then He began to speak to them. “The Scripture you’ve just heard has been fulfilled this very day!” He was announced to all.
Paul likewise learned of this attitude as Acts 17:2 reveals: “As was Paul’s custom, he went to the synagogue service, and for three Sabbaths in a row he used the Scriptures to reason with the people.” Fruit would result from his attitude. Acts 17:4 says: “Some of the Jews who listened were persuaded and joined Paul and Silas, along with many God-fearing Greek men and quite a few prominent women.” Consistency surely leads to excellence. Father, teach us to follow Your consistent example. Amen.
