“I look up to the mountains—does my help come from there? My help comes from the Lord, who made heaven and earth! He will not let you stumble; the one who watches over you will not slumber. Indeed, he who watches over Israel never slumbers or sleeps” (Psalm 121:1-3)

A mother’s tender love for a hurting child is demonstrated in being awake, being aware to cater for the child’s needs. She stays awake to respond to every gesture within her human capacities. Even better is the Lord’s commitment to His own. Isaiah 49:15 says: “Never! Can a mother forget her nursing child? Can she feel no love for the child she has borne? But even if that were possible, I would not forget you!” God is always awake to watch over them. The psalmist likewise speaks of God’s awareness, the God who delights to give “rest to His loved ones” (Psalm 127:2). God could send His legions of angels to keep watch, but in His tenderness, He Himself “never slumbers or sleeps.” The psalmist, first of all, says: “the one who watches over you will not slumber.” In order to deliberately reveal God’s commitment and efficacy, he then declares: “Indeed, he who watches over Israel never slumbers or sleeps.” He does this not just for one person, but He can do this for people at the same time!

Sleepless nights? No! Instead, we can look up to the mountains. For there is the Lord whose help is near. The Lord who sits with us (Genesis 18:1-7) though He is the Maker of the heavens and the earth. So, we fix our eyes on Him, yes on Christ who “authored and perfects our faith” (Hebrews 12:2). Amen.
