“And now I have it all—and keep getting more! The gifts you sent with Epaphroditus were more than enough, like a sweet-smelling sacrifice roasting on the altar, filling the air with fragrance, pleasing God to no end. You can be sure that God will take care of everything you need, His generosity exceeding even yours in the glory that pours from Jesus” (Philippians 4:18-19)

The words above are the words of Paul the Apostle who had earlier said: “I don’t have a sense of needing anything personally. I’ve learned by now to be quite content whatever my circumstances. I’m just as happy with little as with much, with much as with little” (Philippians 4:11-12). Though, he didn’t have a sense of needing anything, yet when he got some gifts from the brethren, his words of appreciation are noteworthy. He said the gifts were “more than enough.” It wasn’t as though he had got everything, but for Paul, it was an increase from what he had before or didn’t have! He also said its “like a sweet-smelling sacrifice roasting on the altar.” For Paul, it smelt pleasant.

Generosity has a fragrance; hence Paul again said the gifts were “filling the air with fragrance” meaning others noticed it. Finally, he said the gifts were “pleasing God to no end.” Not only were they pleasing to him, but to God too! All the while, Paul doesn’t say what the gifts were or their worth. What Paul really saw what their genuine and generous hearts! How grateful are we for what others do for us? How generous are our words of appreciation? We can surely learn from Paul and be richly sincere with our words of appreciation.
