“I look up to the mountains; does my strength come from mountains? No, my strength comes from God, who made heaven, and earth, and mountains” (Psalms 121:1-2)

Mountains are potent fortresses, establishing strongholds and boundaries, providing economic and social stability and security to peoples and nations. Psalm 125:2 says: “As the mountains surround Jerusalem, so the LORD surrounds His people, from this time forth and forevermore.”

A mountain can be a person, a resource, an ability or an institution that we have placed our trust upon. However, the psalmist asks rhetorically: “does my strength come from mountains?” Mountains can be denuded. Isaiah 40:4 says: “Every valley shall be raised up, every mountain and hill made low; the rough ground shall become level, the rugged places a plain.” The psalmist himself did experience being ejected from his spacious palace.

Surely, there is a limit on these things, which themselves have a Creator. So, the psalmist declares that there’s a strength from the Lord who made the “heaven, and earth, and mountains.” He made not only mountains, but the earth that contains the mountains and the heavens above the entire earth.

Now, rather than look around us or within us, we humbly fix our gaze upwards, for “He won’t let you stumble, your Guardian God won’t fall asleep. Not on your life! Israel’s Guardian will never doze or sleep. God’s your Guardian, right at your side to protect you— shielding you from sunstroke, sheltering you from moonstroke. God guards you from every evil, He guards your very life. He guards you when you leave and when you return, He guards you now, he guards you always” (Psalm 121:3-8). Amen.
