“Jesus went up on a mountainside and called to Him those He wanted, and they came to Him. He appointed twelve that they might be with Him and that He might send them out to preach” (Mark 3:13-14)
We may not have the free course to choose everything in life, but we surely can choose the relationships that we want. Relationships are invaluable for everyone in every sphere of life and their effects can be long-lasting. The pricelessness of relationships is clearly marked out in God’s Ten Commandments in a thoughtful order. The first four commandments speak about our relations with Him and the next six commandments anchor on our relations with others.
Closely knit to our relationship with God, is our relationship with others. In the verse above, the Word says Jesus “called to Him those He wanted.” For the assignment ahead, He wanted purposeful relationships. Relationships must be anchored on the tenets of love. Jesus said so when asked what the greatest commandment is (Matthew 22). John 3:16 also says His desire to give all people a relationship with the Father was love-inspired. He “appointed twelve that they might be with Him.”
That’s a loving attitude. He wanted them to become as He is. So, relationships must not be self-seeking or self-pleasing. Galatians 5:13 says: “Do not use liberty as an opportunity for the flesh, but through love serve one another.” The flesh thinks only of itself. Instead, they must be serving and sacrificial, and in this way, bonds are established. So, we need to build them
May the Lord reveal His wisdom to us for establishing this asset. Amen.
