A Time For Rest

“Meanwhile, the apostles gathered around Jesus and brought Him news of all they had done and taught. And He said to them, “Come with Me privately to a solitary place, and let us rest for a while.” For many people were coming and going, and they did not even have time to eat. So, they went away in a boat by themselves to a solitary place” (Mark 6:30-32)
Our Lord Jesus is such an observant and compassionate Saviour. Now, He valued the place of work greatly. In a place, He said: “My Father is always at His work to this very day, and I too am working” (John 5:17). Certainly, there is a time for work, which must not be replaced with rest. Yet, Jesus also valued the place of rest. Now, not only for Himself, but also for His disciples. They had been involved in an activity or other, attending with Him to the people, who the Word says “were coming
and going.” It seemed unending. But Jesus said to them: “Come with Me privately to a solitary place let us rest for a while.” Let ‘us’ rest. Jesus Himself took time to rest. So, Psalm 127 does remind us: “If God doesn’t build the house, the builders only build shacks. If God doesn’t guard the city, the night watchman might as well nap. It’s useless to rise early and go to bed late and work your worried fingers to the bone. Don’t you know He enjoys giving rest to those He loves?”
So, let’s encourage those around us, even those who work with us or for us to have ample times for a refreshing rest.
