A Terrific Responsibility

“This is a terrific responsibility. Is anyone competent to take it on? No—but at least we don’t take God’s Word, water it down, and then take it to the streets to sell it cheap. We stand in Christ’s presence when we speak; God looks us in the face. We get what we say straight from God and say it as honestly as we can” (2 Corinthians 2:16-17)

There’s a responsibility for teachers and preachers of God’s word to make every effort to present God’s word honestly. Yet there also lies a responsibility on us who hear the word to desire the sincere milk of God’s word. The reasons are many why we should desire the sincere word. Paul writes that there are insincere people who “take God’s Word, water it down, and then take it to the streets to sell it cheap.”

About these people, Paul also says: “vicious wolves are going to show up and rip into this flock, men from your very own ranks twisting words so as to seduce disciples into following them instead of Jesus” (Acts 20:29). Truly, words are not ordinary words. On a positive note, however, when we receive His word in humility, James says it is “able to save your souls” (James 1:21). That’s an enormous blessing. “Every word of God is flawless; He is a shield to those who take refuge in Him” (Proverbs 30:5). Oh yes! David likewise sang: “By Your words I can see where I’m going; they throw a beam of light on my dark path.” Let’s make efforts to present (or receive) it honestly. God does help us to be competent and this is possible as we “stand in Christ’s presence.”
