A Good Thing

“My flesh and my heart may fail, but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever. Those who are far from You will perish; You destroy all who are unfaithful to You. But as for me, it is good to be near God. I have made the Sovereign Lord my refuge; I will tell of all Your deeds” (Psalm 73:26-28)

The psalmist sang these closing words after a careful thought seeing the wicked prosper. He almost slipped out of envy. He said: “But as for me, my feet had almost slipped; I had nearly lost my foothold. For I envied the arrogant when I saw the prosperity of the wicked” (Psalm 73:2-3). It was a struggle. He observed again: “They have no struggles; their bodies are healthy and strong. They are free from common human burdens; they are not plagued by human ills” (Psalm 73:4-5). He began to question his commitment to God. He thought: “Surely in vain I have kept my heart pure and have washed my hands in innocence. All day long I have been afflicted, and every morning brings new punishments” (Psalm 73:13-14). All began to seem irrelevant to him, but thankfully he realised: “If I had spoken out like that, I would have betrayed Your children.” Our stance with Christ is a testimony for others! Everything confusion he had changed when he did this: “I entered the sanctuary of God; then I understood their final destiny” (Psalm 73:15-17).

Do our hearts have questions like these? Let’s go into God’s presence. It’s a place of His understanding, the fullness of His joy and His pleasures (Psalm 16:11), where our fogginess receives His light. Psalm 36:9 says: “For with You is the fountain of life; in Your light we see light.” Amen.
