“We thank You, God, we thank You—Your name is our favourite word; Your mighty works are all we talk about” (Psalm 75:1)
Research shows that the average person speaks at least 7,000 words a day. This reveals that we are communicative beings. God made this so in order that we might create a suitable and living world around us just like He did (Genesis 1). So, the psalmist made a choice: “Your name is our favourite word.” God told Moses to tell the Israelites that His name is: “I Am Who I Am” (Exodus 3:14). This means His name is ever-living, ever-present and all-encompassing. Hence, we see His name inscribed in all His creation.
Philippians 2 tells us that when Jesus obeyed the Father, “God raised Him up to the heights of heaven and gave Him a name which is above every other name, that at the name of Jesus every knee shall bow in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue shall confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.” This scripture does not only reveal the supremacy of His name, it also affirms the effectiveness of His name everywhere and in everything: above and below, seen and unseen, physical and spiritual.
As we acknowledge God’s name, we will acknowledge His ways, we will acknowledge His thoughts, we will declare His mighty works and we will ultimately act His words. Then, we say like David: “O LORD, our Lord, How majestic and glorious and excellent is Your name in all the earth!” (Psalm 8:9). May His name indeed be our favourite word.
