“I love the Lord, for He heard my voice; He heard my cry for mercy. Because He turned His ear to me, I will call on Him as long as I live” (Psalm 116:1-2)

How precious are the loving mercies of God? David said the ‘cords of death’ entangled him, he faced anguish and was overcome by distress and sorrow (Psalm 116:3). This sounds like a man whose burdens now ruled him. Yet in his deplorable state, he called upon the Lord saying “Lord, save me,” a cry for mercy, just as Bartimaeus cried to Jesus (Luke 18:38). The Lord heard David just as He heard Bartimaeus. In powerful terms, a disturbed Jeremiah described God’s mercies this way: “The faithful love of the Lord never ends! His mercies never cease. Great is His faithfulness; His mercies begin afresh each morning” (Lamentations 3:22-23). Fresh!

With this renewed insight, Jeremiah now boldly said in the next verse: “The Lord is my inheritance; therefore, I will hope in him!” Hallelujah! We just woke up in God’s inheritance! Truly “the Lord is good to those who depend on Him, to those who search for Him. So, it is good to wait quietly for salvation from the Lord” (Lamentations 3:25-26).

Just like Jeremiah had a mind reset, so did David. David now said: “The Lord is gracious and righteous; our God is full of compassion. The Lord protects the unwary; when I was brought low, He saved me. Return to your rest, my soul, for the Lord has been good to you” (Psalm 116:5-7). Let’s call upon the One who hears. There is a restful place in Jesus (Hebrews 4), the place of our inheritance in Him.
